After more than 14 years of digitizing embroidery, I can tell you that's probably the easiest part.
What really matters are the decisions you make while you're creating the design.
I Don't Think in Objects—I Think in Layers
Before placing the first stitch, I spend a few seconds studying the artwork.
I'm not thinking about which tool to use.
Instead, I'm asking questions like:
- What should stitch first?
- Which objects overlap others?
- Which outline will hide a potential gap?
- Where will the thread finish?
That short analysis makes the entire digitizing process much easier.

First, you build the structure.

I Almost Always Create the Outlines First
Many beginners start by filling every area of the design.
I do the exact opposite.
I prefer creating the main outlines first.

Then I simply extend the fills to meet those outlines, leaving a slight overlap to prevent the fabric from showing through when it shifts during embroidery.

But whenever an object changes direction significantly, spending a few extra seconds adjusting those stitch angles manually gives the design more depth and a much more natural appearance.
It's a difference you may barely notice on the screen, but you'll definitely notice once the design comes off the embroidery machine.
Your Monitor Can Fool You
One thing I recommend from day one is calibrating your monitor.
It may seem like a minor detail, but working with distorted proportions can lead you to make incorrect decisions about shapes and sizes.
